Frequently asked questions
Can I get a grant to replace my oil boiler in BT14?
Yes. Oil-heated homes are a primary target for the Warm Homes Plan. If your BT14 household receives a qualifying benefit and your property has an EPC rating of D or below, you may be eligible for a fully funded air source heat pump to replace your oil boiler, alongside insulation improvements. Submit the form to check your eligibility.
Why are oil-heated homes prioritised for grants?
Homes that rely on oil heating are off the main gas grid. Oil prices are more volatile than mains gas, and oil boilers are less efficient than modern alternatives. The Warm Homes Plan prioritises off-gas-grid properties for heat pump funding because the energy bill savings are typically greater.
Can I also get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for my oil boiler?
Yes. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is available to homeowners who want to replace an oil boiler with a heat pump and do not need to meet income criteria. BUS offers up to £7,500 off a heat pump installation. It can sometimes be combined with Warm Homes Plan funding depending on circumstances.
What happens to my oil tank if I switch to a heat pump?
If you switch to an air source heat pump, your existing oil storage tank will no longer be needed. Your installer will advise on decommissioning and removal of the tank as part of the installation process. Removal costs are typically included in the funded installation package.
Will a heat pump be as warm as my oil boiler?
Yes, when properly specified and installed. A correctly sized heat pump will maintain the same room temperatures as your oil boiler. Your BT14 home will be surveyed to confirm sizing and, if necessary, recommend insulation improvements to ensure the heat pump works efficiently.
Is the eligibility check free?
Yes. The form is free and takes about 60 seconds. If you pre-qualify, an accredited installer covering BT14 will contact you to arrange a free survey.
