Frequently asked questions

What is the main home improvement grant scheme in England?

The Warm Homes Plan is the primary government-funded energy efficiency scheme for England. It funds insulation, heat pumps, solar panels, and other improvements for eligible households. It is administered by DESNZ and delivered through accredited installers. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme also operates in England and Wales, offering up to £7,500 off a new heat pump.

Who qualifies for the Warm Homes Plan in England?

Eligibility requires a qualifying means-tested benefit (such as Universal Credit, Pension Credit, or Income Support) and a property EPC rating of D or below. Owner-occupiers and private tenants with landlord permission can apply. Some households without qualifying benefits may also qualify through the LA Flex route if their local council has identified their area.

Is the Warm Homes Plan available across all of England?

Yes. The Warm Homes Plan is available to eligible households across all of England. The scheme is administered nationally by DESNZ, with accredited installers covering every region. Rural and off-gas-grid properties in England are a particular priority for heat pump funding.

Does the Warm Homes Plan apply in Scotland or Wales?

The Warm Homes Plan is a UK government scheme that primarily applies in England. Scotland has its own equivalent scheme called Warmer Homes Scotland, administered by Home Energy Scotland (0808 808 2282). Wales has the Nest scheme and the Optimised Retrofit Programme, administered by the Welsh Government. Check the Scotland and Wales pages on this site for details.

What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme in England?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a separate UK government grant that offers up to £7,500 off the cost of installing an air source or ground source heat pump in England and Wales. Unlike the Warm Homes Plan, BUS is not means-tested and is open to any homeowner replacing a fossil fuel heating system. The two schemes can be used together for insulation and heating.

Is the eligibility check free?

Yes. The online check is free and takes about 60 seconds. There is no obligation to proceed. An approved installer will contact you to arrange a free survey if you pre-qualify.
